In our last blog we went through our logic & approach, in prioritising the bathroom, so that we could get the renovation into the minimal habitable condition in order to get out of temporary accommodation as soon as possible. The kitchen was going to be a close second, though we knew we’d be living on takeaways & air fryer meals for some time!
The original toilet was segregated, and we decided to keep it that way, and not try to incorporate it to new bathroom space – why make work for ourselves, and why change something from the way it was originally intended.

As with main bathroom, we were limited to a 100mm depth of sheep's wool insulation between floor joists due to plaster & lath ceiling from room below.
Treated all exposed joists with wood preserve, when we had the chance. Slabbed floor with 18mm OSB, followed by a 12mm concrete board sheet, to get the floor back to as level as possible for tiling finish. No mean feat, given the gradient slope of floor joists. There was a fall of over 20mm, which we managed to nullify with layered sheets of OSB & concrete board, as well as some brilliant tiling by Kevin Whitley, who I had worked with before.
As with any good self build (IMHO) – we did all the donkey prep work, including concrete board, and then had it ready for a master tiler like Kevin to come in and work his magic!

I have done tiling myself on a previous home, & know from experience I wouldn’t do it half as well, & would take me 3 times as long, to get anywhere near the finish Kevin has!
We got some sanitary ware from PJ Nolan Bathroom supplies in Carlow, and sourced tiles from Showhouse Tiles & Bathrooms on the Long Mile Road, who we have dealt with before, and are always great to deal with both in terms of range, price & service.

And of course everything finished off with a few selected pieces from HomeStreetHome:
- Architrave Shelf 100cm ,
- Granite Sink, on our Blue Velvet Vintage Cabinet - we applied 2 coats of Satin Yacht Varnish to the top section for added durability
- - 5 Brick mould standing shelf - great space saving storage piece for soaps etc. And our Shekawati frame mirror, for an added bit of interest.

If you are interested in achieving a vintage look for your own bathroom revamp, don't hesitate to contact us for advice on suitable selected pieces.
In our next article, we'll be going through one of the biggest jobs - opening from Kitchen to Dining Room & accommodating for a 5 foot drop between these 2 rooms!
