This particular African mask has facets of Picasso's African period also known as the rose period. Artistic movements such as cubism, fauvism and expressionism have often taken inspiration from the vast and diverse heritage of African masks.

People, animals, and spirits are all depicted by African masks, which are typically worn during ceremonies. Communicating with the spirits or performing initiation rituals, is essential. Different families and tribes are represented by masks as well. These tribal masks may only be worn by the king or the ruler of the tribe, depending on the custom.
